Strengthening Families: Mercer County

Strengthening Families Programs (SFP) are evidence-based parenting and life skills training programs designed to improve outcomes for parents with substance use disorders and to prevent substance use in their children. Studies over the years show that, in addition to being very effective in preventing substance use in children, the program also improves family functioning, reduces violence and abuse, and has positive impacts on children’s mental health.

What is the Strengthening Families Program for Mercer County?

The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a 7 week parenting and family skills training program for high-risk and general population families. The whole family attends and practices new relationship skills together in 2 hour family group sessions. SFP is an evidence-based program designed to significantly improve parenting skills and family relationships, reduce child maltreatment, children’s problem behaviors, delinquency and alcohol and drug abuse; and to improve social competencies and school performance. There are separate classes for parents and youth the first hour, followed by a joint family
practice session the second hour.

Who Can We Serve?

There are four age variants of the Strengthening Families Program. The SFP was originally developed for families with children aged 6-11 (SFP 6-11).This group will be for the original development of 6-11. Other ages are welcomed, but will not participate in the program, but will be entertained by staff.
